Aztec Ruins overview - Aztec, New Mexico

The well-preserved, and partly restored structures at Aztec Ruins National Monument suggest a long period of inhabitation and reliable means of sustenance. They were occupied 900 years ago by the ancient Puebloans of the Southwest. In the 1800's it was believed that the Aztecs of Mexico had migrated south from the American Southwest. Early Euro-American explorers would occasionally name the ruins they discovered by such names as "Aztec," or "Montezuma's Castle."
