Exposed floor beams at Chetro Ketl, Chaco Culture National
Historic Park
Beams
like these, visible in a wall at Chetro Ketl, helped archeologists
determine where the wood came from, and to determine the
date when the structure was built. The research shows
that to build the great houses of Chaco Canyon, over 200,000
trees were cut, dried, then hauled from the forested mountains,
sixty miles away. The great houses were contructed over
a three hundred year period, beginning around AD 850 to
around AD 1150.
