Geologic strata with ancient shell fossils, found in the
canyon wall
The
weathered old canyons, deserts, and mesas of northwestern
New Mexico were once at the bottom of an even more ancient
sea, as shown by this layer of seashells from more than
75 million years ago in the Late Cretaceous Period.
