Growing up in the Great Lake State, close to Lake Michigan, I spent countless days of my youth at the beach and tromping through the sand dunes that dot the coastline. The warm caress of the summer sand seeping between young toes is etched in my memory and in my senses.

Hiking South to Hole-In-the-Wall - Olympic National Park, Washinton State

Much of the Pacific coast of Washington state has escaped the fate of many of our nation's shorelines and remains mostly wild and protected as part of the Olympic National Park, or has stayed in its natural state due to the rugged, undevelopable nature of the coastal topography. In this photo, hikers are on the last leg of a taxing 35 mile wilderness trek from Ozette beach in the north, travelling south to Hole in the Wall and Rialto Beach, near the community of LaPush, Washington.
