Growing up in the Great Lake State, close to Lake Michigan, I spent countless days of my youth at the beach and tromping through the sand dunes that dot the coastline. The warm caress of the summer sand seeping between young toes is etched in my memory and in my senses.

Heading out on Lake Michigan - St. Joseph, Michigan

The western coast of Michigan in summertime is a paradise for vacationers and revelers who crowd clean sandy beaches, enjoy summer arts festivals, catch their limit in salmon, body surf and watch world class sunsets. Winter shows a different face when ice forms on the lake in ridges that stretch to the horizon, howling gales push the wind chill factor down to 40 below, and gift shops are shuddered for the season.
