Shoulder of Koma Kulshan (Mt. Baker) in Winter Blanket, Washington State

Mt. Baker is what the Europeans named it, but the first moniker of this mighty volcano was Koma Kulshan, and it was revered by the indigenous Salish people of the region. The name "Koma Kulshan" is a Lummi Indian word that meant "Great White Watcher." There have been sizeable eruptions of the mountain as recent as the mid-1800s. Kulshan-Baker was first climbed in1868. On any given day, a modern climber reaching the summit receives a sickening rotten-egg smell as sulpher and steam wafts from Sherman Crater.

Mt. Baker is "pound-for-pound" the most glaciated peak in the contiguous United States.
